This Association has been in communication with

its branch in Hongkong and with the Hongkong Chamber of

Commerce in connection with the Report recently issued by

the Salaries Commission appointed by the Hongkong Govern-

ment.

In face of the recent heavy fall in the price of

silver, the proposed adoption at the present moment of the

recommendations contained in the Report has caused consider-

able apprehension in the minds of the commercial community

in Hongkong lest the adjustments proposed should cause wide-

spread dissatisfaction amongst the foreign clerical staffs and

Chinese labour in the Colony at a particularly inopportune

time.
